Yes I know I haven´t updated in a while, yes I know I should, but I just didn´t feel like it. But here we go then an update on my life.
First let me start to tell you that I have vacation in a few days. Just need to finish editing a program concerning an ethnic fashionshow and then I am off to Holland. I could have taken vacation already, but now I have the option to take a few days in August, thus giving me the chance to go to Lowlands.
Anyways, the last weeks have been normal, busy and sometimes borring. Shortly after I came home from Holland my roommates went away for a week, so I was bored and alone. One went to Sweden (Lone), and the other one (Morten) to Roskilde festival. So that week I downloaded all episodes of Greys Anatomy I hadn´t seen yet and placed my bed so that I could comfortably watch it.
At work I had mostly editing to do, since I filmed two big events the weekend before. The modeshow, and more Somali women. Most people I talked to are familiar with my growing relationship with the Somali women in Århus, especially Ambara, mostly referred to as the silly lady. She is one headstrong character. Calls me on all hours of the day, every day of the week asking me if I can come over to do something for her. Like installing a Firewire card in her computer, go shopping with her or explain to her how to transfer files from her camera to her PC.
She thinks I am very clever, and is amazed by my computer skills. Joost if you are still reading this, thanks for the lessons!
Allthough it might sound annoying, I like her. She is a good training for my 'saying no' skills. And as long as I do that we are fine. One day when I went to buy a firewire card with her, her car broke down and we had to wait two hours for Falck (Danish ANWB). There she told me also about her experiences in Somalia, and why she came here. When the civil war broke out there, people came to her house to kill her, and her family. Luckily because of some misunderstanding she managed to get away, leaving everything she owned, but with her family. In Somalia she was involved in politics and when she arrived in Denmark she started a somali women organisation to educate and help refugees. Now she is leading the organisation Iftiin (enlightenment), that is fighting for the end of female mutilation. And that is the reason I am involved with her.
By means of sketches, singing and dancing they are trying to empower women to stand up for themselves, and ban female mutilation. I am accompaning them on all there performances to film and report. The last performance was at some huge gymnastics/cultural event in the south of Denmark. I had mentioned I could possibly drive a car if they needed a driver. The result was that I had to rent a van (ofcourse paid by them) and drive that, filled with Somali girls. Ok...
It was on a saturday morning at seven (!!!) when I had to pick up the van. The evening before we had a goodbye party of a collegue where we got very drunk, so I wasn't very happy when my alarm clock went. But I managed to get there. Ofcourse later then planned because the busses are never going on time.
When I arrived at the car rental place the car wasn't ready yet, because they thought I would be there at eight. When I could finally leave I had to go and pick up a camera at work. Normally when I go there, other people are around, but this time everyone sane person was ofcourse still sleeping. Therefor I had to switch of the alarm myself, and put it back on again. Getting it off, was no problem, but getting it on again... I followed all the instructions, but everytime it started to make a very loud noise that just would not stop. I had to wake up two collgues of mine to find out that the noise actually was supposed to be there, and that it would stop after a minute or so.
By that time I was ofcourse panicking, late and therfor in a hurry. I also did not know how to get to Ambara's house where I had to pick people up, and I thought the van was awfully big. Anyways, I found the address (using all my calling credit), got used the van and pulled the whole thing off without serious accidents. Also managed to film, and eat icecream.
Another development in my life is that I think I have found out where my stomach problems come from. I think it is birds, or poultry. As long as I don't eat chicken, turkey, duck or anything of the kind, I have no problems. But when I do eat it, my stomach gets upset. Sometimes just a little, but still. So I am not eating it anymore, and going to see if it is possible to get tested or something. I also found some information on the internet, and actually someone describing exactly the same symptoms as I have. What is kinda reassuring.
Then the last big event was the circus. Last friday we had to go and film at the circus that is in town.
With trapeze and acrobats and an elephant. So I was very excited :) We interviewed some kid who did an act with his brother (was a childrens program). And then we could see the show and walk around. I felt like a little girl walking around with a camera :)
Now if everything goes according to plan I will take the train to Holland on thursday. And then I will be staying for two weeks.
That was it for today, Sweet dreams etc. See you soon!
